Hello Experts -

I have recently installed MOSS 2007 on Server 2008 for the first time - everything installed fine without problems and I could even create the first toplevel site (http://mycompany) from Central Administration but after creation the site does not show on IE.

Am I missing a step to enable the site somehow?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

What do you mean by does not show? A blank screen, a screen with an error message, ... ?
If you are using hostheaders you should disable the loopback check:

IE error page cannot be displayed. This is the case for all sites created successfully through CA. I will try disabling the loopback and post the results. Thanks

The loopback registry entry did not resolve the issue.
Issue resolved by creating forward lookups in the AD integrated DNS
