Windows 2003 Domain Controller hangs spontaneous

Hello,

We have got a problem with a domain controller running on Windows 2003 R2 std, SP2. It's a Dell T300 (4GB)

Almost every day (not structural) the server "hangs".

The users which are already logged in after the server hangs, are not able anymore to approach the server (like network shares, network applications crashes, etc).

Users which login after the server hangs, are not able to login.

When we log in on the console the crtl+alt+delete function is working and we can put in a password, then the settings are loading.... but then nothing happens for a long long time. So the server is not freezing..  but only a hard reset will do the trick..

The logs don't display any events which can be cause this problem. Also performance logs will not show any errors..

We request a case by Dell. Logs will not show any hardware failures..

I contacted Dell and send a DSET log to them. No hardware failures..
Then try to restore from a backup file or repair the OS.
have you installed dell openManage if so have you checked the logs on that to verify the issues
Dell OpenManage will not show any errors... everything just looks fine..
Restore backup is not an option right now
How much memory and what about free space on the system partition?
How looks the performance in the Task manager when this problem occurs?
Have you installed any additional or done any hardware changes, tape drives etc.?
Did you have any viruses or trojans on this server?
Have you checked your server with Bitdefender Online Scan?
Are you getting these problems when the virenscanner is updating the signatures or is doing a full scan?
What additional Software ist installed on this server?
has anything changed prior to this problem occurring? i.e. new software installed, windows updates etc?

Try uninstalling your AV software temporarily, this can sometimes cause apps to lock like this.

Also consider removing UPS software as this also tends to hook into Windows at a low level.
Any chance to backup the entire system using a bare metal recovery software and to restore it onto another piece of hardware? Convert it into a VM would be another idea.

This should isolate the issue into either a software issue or hardware one.

You can then take appropiate action from there.
@ Anonym:

Mem is 4GB (3GB free, pagefile around 1,5GB)
But the pagefile was set on 2GB-4GB. This might be a problem. We will change the pagefile tonight to disc C: and system managed.

Further no hardware changes, no virusses or trojans. Additional software is a .NET application.

Virusscanner is NOD32..

pls check:

BTW can you check when are signatures updates and full scan configured at NOD32?
Try to configure signatures updates only once at night and full scan on weekends.
Unfortunately, replacing the pagefile was not the solution. The server runs stable for about 3 days, but this morning it hangs again :(

Anoym:
About NOD32: Updates are recent and full scan is disabled, realtime security is running.
Sorry, there was a typo before. We set the Pagefile on D: instead of C:..
