Cannot remove public folders

I have a user running Outlook 2002 (xp) and he keeps getting a popup "trying to receive data from..."   It's trying to pull data from our old email server.  I believe I have narrowed down the issue to the public folders he has set up... there are no public folders on our new exchange server.   I tried to remove the public folders from his Outlook but it says "these folders belong to a mail account... please use 'email accounts' in the tools menu to remove them"  ....there is nothing I can find in "email accounts" to fix this.... help?

I guess, before I dive into this... does the email account need to be deleted from the machine or completely deleted from Exchange?   I'm hoping the answer is just the local machine...

i think only in outlook (local)

you can find this emailaccountsettings in outlook->"Extra"->"Account" (above Options in Outlook Express)
