Vostro is the bottom of the line for Dell, then Latitude, then Inspirons.  So Inspirons in general are better.  However, if you compared a bare bones Inspiron to a fully loaded Vostro the Vostro would obviously be better.

Bottom line is Inspirons in general are better then Vostros.
the only physical difference is that the Inspirons are smaller then then vostros

I dispute tenaj-207's claims.

The Inspiron line is the HOME USER and some small business line.  These systems change rapidly and aren't always as well tested as they should be.

The Vostro line is intended for Small and Medium Businesses and was introduced about 4-5 years ago.  IN THEORY, they are better than the Inspiron line.  I still wouldn't buy one.

The Latitude line is intended for Businesses.  These systems tend to have a long life-cycle, are generally WELL TESTED, and designed to be used and supported in businesses environments.  These are the only laptops I buy from Dell.

The Workstation line is intended for Businesses and specialized functions in business that require advanced capabilities that the latitude line doesn't have.  For example, large RAM capacities, multiple hard drives, and relatively high-end dedicated graphics cards (generally appropriate for CAD graphics, not usually for gaming graphics).

To be clear, Latitude and Vostro lines are NOT meant for gaming.  They are meant for BUSINESS use and similar usage.  If you expect to use the laptops in such a manner, I would strongly recommend Latitude laptops.  (I don't game and so I don't generally recommend laptops for such purposes).

And to be clear - any laptop can be used for anything - how well it performs is another story.  And in terms of reliability, Latitude and Workstation series (in my opinion) are the most reliable products.  EVERYTHING can fail - even these - but the idea is to reduce the odds of failure and needing support - in that case, I trust the Latitude and Workstation lines to give me the BEST odds of attaining that level of reliability.

Biggest difference I have noticed is that Vostros tend to not have junk-ware or trials installed on them. They are targeted for the business market.

I am not a Dell fan, though, so I shouldn't be trusted.

:=)
Lee's correct, I have the Latitude and Inspiron models switched.

I agree with leew's comments.

My support experience leads me to believe that Inspiron is less reliable than Vostro.

Vostro is much more rigid in performance as it normally comes with three years of warranty whereas Inspiron is for home user and its market position is lowest price among all DELL lines and it normally comes with one year of warranty.

For gamer, only the Alienware line is suitable.
