For component level things like DIP switches, if you want to buy them at a store, your best bet is probably Radio Shack / The Shack - Fry's is great and may have what you're looking for, but they aren't nationwide (stores in less than 20% of the states), Radio Shack is just about everywhere.
not sure if they all have but you can check in circuit city and best buy.

Circuit City went Bankrupt a year ago.  Best Buy doesn't sell components like that - network adapters and basic stuff, yes, but not things like DIP Switches.

If you're looking for basic network cards, maybe USB cards, and the like, then Radio Shack has a limited supply, Micro Center (and north and east US in generally major population centers) and Fry's (South and West), Best Buy is nationwide and carries a pretty good selection of home and perhaps small business class things, Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max all carry a limited selection in store.  If you purchase via mail order, then your options are vast and most favor www.newegg.com.
