Password Recovery on Cisco C2960-8TC-L with no Mode button

On all Cisco C2960 switches except the C2960-8TC-L 8 port switch there is a Mode button to hold down while doing a power cycle to break to ROMMON.

Since the C2960-8TC-L has no Mode button, how do you break the boot sequence to go to ROMMON? I have tried the typical CNTL key sequences with no success.

Thank you for your reply.

Some Catalyst 29xx series switches do not have an external mode button for password recovery. Instead the switch boot loader uses the break-key detection to stop the automatic boot sequence for the password recovery purposes. The break sequence is determined by the terminal application and operating system used. Hyperterm running on Windows 2000 uses Ctrl + Break. On a workstation running UNIX, Ctrl-C is the break key.

Commented:
If you are not using hyperterminal on Windows, pls let me know what you use and I can suggest the break key sequence for you.

Thank you for your post.
I use SecureCRT 6.5.1. I have been trying the CTRL-Break suggested for SecureCRT in Cisco Document ID: 12818 - Standard Break Key Sequence Combinations During Password Recovery, as well as all the other suggested key sequences.

BTW, I can break into other switches using the CTRL-Break key sequence.

Do you have a direct serial port connection (a DB9 or DB25 connection from your PC to the router) or you are actually connecting from something else (e.g. modem dial in, Bluetooth serial port, USB-Serial adaptor)?

Commented:
I am using the DB9 Cisco Serial Console cable connected to Com1 on PC to Console Port on switch. COM1 is configured with Baud Rate at 9600, Data Bits at 8, Parity at None, Stop Bit at 1, and Flow Control at RTS/CTS.

In this case, I am not able to think of any reason that it won't work. May be other expert can help.

Is there a button to the left of the console port?

Author

Commented:
No. On this C2960-8TC-L, to the left of the Console port are the four LEDs labeled, SYST, STAT, DPLX, and SPD. Directly below and to the right of the SPD LED and left of the Console port, the panel is labeled "MODE", but the panel is not punched through and there is no button.

when u press there, does it feel like a button? I do not have a C2960-8TC-L with me so I cannot tell. Some of the newer switches the button is beneath a plastic sheet which is part of the front panel graphic.

Author

Commented:
Thank you. Even though the panel is covered with a plastic sheet, there is a membrane switch under the plastic cover. No button but a membrane switch. Functionality is just like the push button on other 2960 switches.
