Backup Exec 12 for Windows Server on SBS 2003 backup errors and failures

BEWS 12 backups started failing earlier this week on a SBS 2003 R2 server for a client that I just acquired. We are backing up to 2 different rotating Seagate external drives. We are running daily incremental backups and a weekly full backup. I am new to BEWS 12 and could use some help deciphering the error logs and failed backups.

Below is a summary of the errors and failed backups during the last week. I would appreciate any and all help to resolve these issues.

Have you seen the following Symantec article. It outlines some issue regarding the Exchange store problem, but the A/V and fragmented disk issues could apply to the other errors as well.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your reply. The Seagate external drive was severely fragmented. I have defragged it once and it still reported 65% file fragmentation after completion. I will run another defrag pass today and see if tonight's backup completes successfully.

Brad
Thanks for the update Brad. Let us know how you make out. Hopefully that will help the issue.

After defragging the Seagate drive, last night's backup failed also when it got to the system state component with the error below:

Job ended: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 at 6:13:33 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000fe7d - Access is denied.
To back up or restore System State, administrator privileges are required.
Final error category: Security Errors
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65149

Backup- ServerName-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "System?State". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE000FE7D): Access is denied.
To back up or restore System State, administrator privileges are required.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

There appear to be a number of people that are having the same problem with system state backup in BEWS 12 and 12.5. We are running Ver 12 rev 1364 with SP4 and 336046 updates.

The V-79-57344-65149 link above takes you to this site:
http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/access-denied-errors-and-faliure-messages

I tried the fixes referenced in the above forum with no luck:
1.) Add Backup Operators group to the Backup Exec account used for backups
2.) Edit the credentials used for the job to add the domain in front of the user name (ie: DOMAIN\backupexec instead of just backupexec)

For now, I have removed system state from backup selection to see if it completes successfully. I have also configured ntbackup to backup the system state for the time being.

Brad

Your right. Googling indicates you are not alone.
If installed have you tried un-installing the Symantec 336718 hotfix?

The the Symantec 336718 hotfix does not appear to be installed. We are running Ver 12 rev 1364. SP4 and 336046 are the only updates that are being reported by BEWS.
Sorry i am out of ideas at this time. I'll stay 'tuned in'. Hopefully others will have some suggestions.
