well sometimes you don't see the forest for the trees. <br />

After sending the pic I deleted the partition and then recreated it with ntfs and voila - drive letter. I am surprised I need to do this out of the box though. The 200MB partition is not touchable in disk mananagement.<br />

Recently I have attached a 500gb verbatim surefire external drive to a windows 7 and xp machine. Though the drive shows up in disk management - no drive letter is assigned. The disk is online. The only command available to me is to convert to dynamic disk - this is not an option. There are no other options for this drive. <br />

Where do I go from here?<br />
