Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to extend an existing sharepoint site to enable all links to work correctly when accessing the Internal site from outside through an ISA 2006 DMZ.
I have access to it from outside to ISA server and can logon to site but a lot of links like shred documents work but the info in the folders doesnt show, webpage 404 error, it works fine Internally.
If I extend an existing site does this duplicate the existing DB and thus create new links for correct translation for the ISA server to work properly. Does this then automatically update anything added to the internal website to the extended one ..i.e does it miiror it ?? I belive I also have to add an alternate access mapping but what I'm tryin to achieve is access to an Internal urls which aren't on the sharepoint server e.g http://servername/folder , I read global address mappings can achive this but I cannot find any examples of how to or the syntax to create the global mapping ....any help Thanks in Advance.

yes, you need to extend application, it could use the same content so no duplications here. you just need to set different zones in AAM. But you will need to use external URLs while accessing resources from external zone anyway.

So to clarify, you're saying if I go to "Create or Extend  a Web Application"  in sharepoint App Manager and select "Extend an existing Web Application" then select my current sharepoint site and then should I create a new IIS Website or Use an Existing IIs Website, If using I select "Use an existing IIS website"...... does this then use the db of the current sharepoint so all changes to the Internal website will be reflected to the outside world users ???

I don't remember exact steps to extend your Internal portal to Internet zone, but it's pretty easy and it's reusing your content here. Check link in my first reply please for details.

Since I cant get enough info on this and in trialling something I not a 100% on what I'm doing , I gonna Convert the Phsyical server to a VM first on my HyperV , then after my DPM backups it up, then I'll feel easier stuffin with it as if it goes pear shaped I have DPM to restore the VM to a previous backup easily rather than trying to fix a wrecked sharepoint which I'm sure youre all aware would be a nightmare!!..
