Hyper-V Integration services not detecting child OS ("unknown")

bcoyxp used Ask the Experts™

I am running a Server server 2008 R2 Hyper - V.

I am moving a windows 2000 server vm from VS2005 to Hyper-V R2. Integration services were successfully installed yet on the SCVMM 2008, the OS of the VM shows "unknown".

the VM's registry entry on "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Auto" shows it right.

what do you think would be blocking it?

the VM's OS is Windows Server 2000, OSversion 5.0.2195

Well, the version you have mentioned indicates that you don't have service pack 4 installed.
Can you update the server to SP4 and see if that helps.

Hyper V documentation mentions Windows Server 2000 w/ SP4 and Windows Advance Server w/ SP4 as supported operating systems.

If that doesn't help, You can have a look at this article
As mentioned in the article see if the "Hyper V Data Exchange Service" is running in your VM OS.

Hope that helps.

thanks ms,

i might need to review on the SP4 side. sp4 might not have installed correctly on the server even though it reflects sp4 on it's system properties.

yes, i have reviewed the second link you gave, and yes all integration services-related are running well.

My Windows 2000 SP4 virtual machines that were migrated from Virtual Server 2005 to Hyper-V do not auto-detect the OS either.  As such, I believe this is expected behavior and not something to worry about.

thanks for your input. i might consider the same then.

thanks guys.

though solution is accepted, main objective wasnt achieved.
