I have an iso file which is about 8 Gigs. I'm trying to copy it over to an external harddrive.
the harddrive has 100+ Gig free, but I can't get this copy to go through. another iso file that's about 3Gb copies over. What gives?
I'm using Windows Vista to a portable Transcend device.

The problem might be that you have formatted it as FAT or FAT 32, then you won't be able to save files larger than 4 Gb - 1 byte.

Check the format of the external device. Is it NTFS?

It looks like your external drive has FAT or FAT32. You can find some info on the following Experts Exchange thread regarding FAT size limitation.

The solution is to convert your external drive from FAT/FAT32 to NTFS. Here's the steps to do it:

okay my boyfriend is using the drive and he didn't bring it home. Will try change to NTFS tomorrow and let you all know  how it goes. Thanks for the info though. didn't know about the limitations of FAT.

Remember to backup your data before you format it, you will loose all data on the disk.

I've found an easier solution to convert the file system (FAT32 to NTFS). You can use the following free software. Easeus Partition Master Free Edition. Here's the link to download the software (alternative download link from download.com). Choose the Home Edition

Here's a step by step tutorial to convert using Easeus Partition Master:

How to convert FAT partition to NTFS?

Don't forget to backup important files from your external drive. Make sure the electricity always on (no blackout).

Hope that helps :-)
