iso file too large to copy to external hard drive

I have an iso file which is about 8 Gigs. I'm trying to copy it over to an external harddrive.
the harddrive has 100+ Gig free, but I can't get this copy to go through. another iso file that's about 3Gb copies over. What gives?
I'm using Windows Vista to a portable Transcend device.

okay my boyfriend is using the drive and he didn't bring it home. Will try change to NTFS tomorrow and let you all know  how it goes. Thanks for the info though. didn't know about the limitations of FAT.
Remember to backup your data before you format it, you will loose all data on the disk.
