Is there an simple way to regain hard drive space after virtual machines have been deleted from an existing system? Have inherited system and was trying to cleanup by removing old VM's from an existing volume. I have copied them off as appliances first before this deletion but the space has been released back as free as I had exspected when I deleted from disk.

Which vmware product you use? If esx/esxi, ensure that you've delete from disk not just remove from Inventory in the VI client

It is ESX35 and they weren't in Inventory and they were deleted from disk.

Have you "refresh" storage after deleting them? Do you still see the VMs files in datastore browser?

This was easy to fix after further investigation. The ESX was 3.0.2 not 35 as we had originally thought. Just had to wait to shutdown all production VM's and reboot. The free space was recalculated at restart.
