I am using the SBS 08 sp2 upgrade tool just relased from microsoft.

When the SP2 installer starts I get the following error:

"Setup previously failed while performing the action "uninstall". You cannot resume setup by performing the action"BuildToBuildUpgrade"."

I dont see any water marks in the reg.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

There is a lot of confusion around the watermark key (Microsoft have commented that these keys should not be removed)

But again this works for some people I would advise you to contact MS or try the below at your own risk:

Look for any watermark keys under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\AdminTools
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ClientAccessRole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\HubTransportRole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\MailboxRole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\UnifiedMessagingRole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ClusteredMailboxServer

Post by MS:

"Please stop deleting watermark keys in the registry to work around these issues. These watermark keys are there for a reason and the actual underlying problem needs to be resolved before continuing setup by using Add/Remove programs. You have to look at the Exchange setup logs to determine what failed by referencing the watermark key in the registry with what is in the setup logs.

Deleting a watermark key will leave your server in an incomplete Exchange configuration and YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS with your server. You may think that things are installed properly, but somewhere down the road, more problems may occur.

There are special considerations for upgrading a CMS for SP1 in which this fails and how to work around it, but for regular non-CMS roles, this is not the way to go.

If you cannot figure this out, then you need to call Microsoft support for further assistance.

The only thing I can see on these logs is:

PrepareAD has either not been run or has not replicated to the domain controller used by Setup

Could you run the following tools please on your SBS 2008 server:

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP2 Installation Tool for Windows SBS 2008

Let me know how you get on as this correct problems it may find

On that note Unfortaunately I do not know and dont have a 2007 environment to test as I am now on 2010...I am not comfortable with advising you to remove or amend registry keys related to water marks as per my previous post this is not recommended, the logs are indicating adprep has not completed / or replicated? Did you ran adprep?

If not I would try this first and if this fails then to contact MS or wait for another Expert to post sorry I could not help any further the last thing I want to do is give you the wrong advice as this is a production environement

The following from your logs:

Schema Update Required Status : 'True'
PrepareAD has either not been run or has not replicated to the domain controller used by Setup

I would attempt this first

DAgent,

Just following up did you manage to resolve this? If so do you mind sharing what you did?

No, I havent found anyother solution.

If I remove exchange 2007, restart the box then re install it. Will all my settings and mailbox data files be there?

What will I have to do to get it running again?

Commented:
Hello,

Do not remove exchange as you will break everything I would instead advise to contact ms support I know it's a pain but this is a production environment and for the sake of £200 (cost of a support ticket)  it's not worth the risk it would also be great if you could post what steps they walked you through so others who have this problem can refer to this article
