I have a machine that the hard disk is failing on. I have a replacement hard disk but want to take the image of the current os first so I can replace it on the new hard drive without having to rebuild. I don't think loading vmware converter on the problem machine will work as to do to anything on the machine take forever. Any ideas?

You could try Clonezilla.

http://clonezilla.org/

Not free but extremely good is Acronis.
You can image the disk and convert it to any VMWare format you want out-of-the-box
I prefer to use Symantec Ghost using disk-to-disk option or creating image over the network on another PC.
Acronis in Gartner 2019 MQ for datacenter backup

It is an honor to be featured in Gartner 2019 Magic Quadrant for Datacenter Backup and Recovery Solutions. Gartner’s MQ sets a high standard and earning a place on their grid is a great affirmation that Acronis is delivering on our mission to protect all data, apps, and systems.

Is clonzilla something I can just install on the client machine or do I need to create an iso on a CD
Install and it will direct you to burn a CD that you will use to begin the cloning.
Does not have to be on client machine.
