Hi guys

I have a weird problem with Symantec BackupExec Continuous Protection server.

I have 4 jobs in CPS:
1. Exchange CPS backup running every 4 hours
2. SQL CPS backup running every 4 hours between 8 and 16
3. data CPS backup running once a week
4. data CPS backup running every 4 hours between 8 and 16

Facts:
No limit is set on VSS on the volume where the snapshots are stored
There is enough disk space on the volume where the snapshot are stored

However, I got 2 events in the System Event log saying:

The oldest shadow copy of volume E: was deleted to keep disk space usage for shadow copies of volume E: below the user defined limit.

It deleted 2 oldest snapshots, first was 1 week old, second was 2 weeks old.

Can you advise me why the snapshots are being deleted please?

Thanks

Are you sure this isn't referring to the Windows shadow copies, and not the Symantec BackupExec snapshots?  Windows has it's own limits as to how much space it will use for shadow copies, and it could be deleting those to make room for more.

The Volume shadow copy is disabled on this volume and I can see in BackupExec CPS console that the 2 snapshots were deleted by external source. This means that it was deleted by VSS and I matched the times and found the event in system logs.

When you say "No limit is set on VSS on the volume where the snapshots are stored" I suppose you mean you have the "No limit" radio button selected in the Settings for VSS for that volume - correct?

The documentation on the Microsoft site indicates that the "No Limit" setting corresponds to a maximum Shadow Storage space of 15% of the size of the disk. Maybe you've reached the 15% limit.

Could http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312067 apply?

Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes, "No limit is set on VSS on the volume where the snapshots are stored" means that the No Limit radio button is selected.
I didn't know that there is 15% of storage space limit when you select this option. I changed the unlimited to the size of max capacity of the volume which is 465GB and I used 476160MB value for max limit.

I think that the linked article doesn't apply, because we didn't defrag the volume and we also had only 2 of events with event ID33.

Now we need to observe it for few days and see what happens.
