Error when opening site settings in WSS 3.0

When I am in any site and I go to site actions site settings this page appears with an error:

Go back to site
Error

 Method not found: 'System.Web.UI.CojtrolCollection System.Web.UI.Control.get_Controls()'.

How do I correct this? A user who has access to SharePoint designer opened a few files that have an issue being opened by that tool. That caused SharePoint as a whole to crash. We were able to bring SharePoint back up, but now get the error when we attempt to open site settings.

I did notice that in the string Control is misspelled, could this be the issue?

This is running on a server 2003 system.

Sadly Sharepoint Designer is very dangerous to someone who is playing around with the master pages or page layouts.

I think you are going to have to rollback the customizations.

For example here is how to reset a customized page:

Unfortunately there are no customizations to roll back.

Well pages don't just stop working.  Are you saying this is the very first time someone used Sharepoint Designer on this page?

I spent 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft Support and got nowhere. I decided to upgrade wss to sp2 in hopes that the upgrade would overwrite the file causing the issue. It did and we are up and going.
