Default Email Client for Open Office 3.x wont work with Outlook Express

On a Win Xp Pro SP3 PC, which has previously had MS Office 97 installed with Outlook 97, OO won't default to Outlook Express as the email client. It is set in Windows as the default email client and appears to work correctly as the default outside of OO, but OO keeps trying to launch Outlook 97's mail configuration wizard. Setting Thurnderbird as the default in Windows, also works as the default in OO, but I just can't get Outlook Express to operate as the default.

I would rather use Outlook Express as the email client and would appreciate any suggestions how to remedy the fault.

Thanks in advance.

i do not know the full answer but i can narrow it down. my vista computer did this just fine. also i have had an older version of office on my computer at one time. but it was not installed at any time while i was using open office. also i know that outlook edits or moves some file also used by outlook express. this caused some probloms on my computer but are now fixed i don't remember exactly how though. i would reinstall OOo to the latest version if you havn't already. hopefully this will help other experts find the problom.

Already reinstalled the application, but to no avail.

OOo does not store this setting, but pulls it from internet options.

Make sure those are set correctly :

Start >> Control Panel >> Internet Options
Then select Programs Tab
Make sure Outlook Express is selected for you email program.

Sorry should have added  . . and works fine as the default, but just not in OO.
what must be happening is that the outlook installation left something behind that interferes with OOo. i don't think it is a setting because if you set thunderbird up and it worked then set outlook express up and it didn't then it is probobly set right. i would run a registry cleaner and see if that fixes it. i suggest tweaknow.com for a free reg. cleaner or you can look here. this may remove a problom outlook left. also a registry cleaner is a handy tool even if it doesn't fix this. hope this helps.
You list the the email program is the default in Windows, but did you check the Internet Options settings like I asked?  Windows still might think the program is the default program but be leaving Internet Options set differently.  In that instance most everything would think Outlook is the default program but OOo would not.  Please check that setting specifically.

If it is set correctly, then some other part of windows is corrupted.  This could be difficult to track down.  A Registry Cleaner can be used, just make sure you back up your registry before running it.

Yes, it is set as the Windows default. Will try running CCleaner.
I don't know if you tried this already. For instance launch Thunderbird and let it be set to be the default client. Then close TB and launch Outloo Express to set it back to be the default client. After that check in Openoffice if it took the same settings.
