Can Drupal integrate with a SQL database?

Last Modified: 2012-05-09
I am thinking of using Drupal for the first time.  I assume that there is no issue with creating forms that enable users to pull an push data into/from a SQL database?  If yes, does the SQL database need to be on the same server?  Is this integration complex?  Ie... is there anything different about doing this in Drupal vs just plain old PHP?
