Instead of reinstalling software, I suggest going into your CMOS and seeing what it says is connected. (Hopefully your CMOS reports that sort of information.)

Already re-installed software. Not sure what to look for in BIOS i just went there did not see my device, but the light blinks, and tray opens.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a standard BIOS. And unfortunately, we don't know if the BIOS reports SATA DVD drives. (SATA, right?)
You could try booting to the drive if you have a bootable CD.
You could try a self contained Linux CD such as Ubuntu too. However, you'll need another computer or a friend do actually burn the CD (since this drive doesn't work). Seems like a lot of work to just test a DVD drive but you've shown your willingness to do a lot of work.
If this is Windows, are you sure the driver is installed? (Of course, it should have figured this out by itself.)
I've experienced this problem several times. It's most likely a registry problem with UpperFilters. Follow the process at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 and you should be set.

Hmccurdy...Yes it's a Sata...when you say bootable CD do you mean the Windows Installation disk? As far as drivers i didn't think of this that cause after i did the repair installation the drivers were updated and it still did not recognize the drive.
I should however install windows updates, and net framework updates. Then i will try and install the drivers for the writer then we will see.
Please get back to me on what you mean by that bootable CD, Thanks!
Galdahalla I have a clean install, how can that be?
if you can boot from a bootable cd - dvd; it means that at least your drive can read them.
also check in device manager for errors on it.
or test the drives - and cables - on another pc
you can also try other cables...that's about it..
Can't boot anymore from from Windows CD downloading Knoppix now!

Now i cant see it in Device manager

If the light blinks and the tray opens it means the device is getting power. But there might be a problem with the SATA cable that connects the device to your mainboard. Try replacing the cable and make sure that you have the latest SATA drivers for your mainboard. You can also check the drive in a friends computer and make sure that SATA is enabled in the BIOS. After you have checked the above and the device still don't work, it might be faulty and would need to be replaced.
It could also be the firmware update that did not update properly. This happens when there is a power spike or when you did not complete the update process for some reason. If this is the case, you can kiss the drive goodbye and get a new one.
But did you try the steps which have been suggested earlier? If it does not work then it is most likely the firmware upgrade's fault.
nobus
what was the reason for updating the firmware?

[[[[Vast41, have you checked the registry for the UpperFilters problem. If they are set, then the drive will not show up in device manager or My Computer.]]]
Galdahalla... I have checked the registry for the UpperFilters problem. They are not even there, thats not the problem.
[[[ Any luck on finding a bootable CD? If so, and it won't boot, try a different computer to make sure the CD is bootable.
The reason for this test is that if the CD does boot, then we know a Windows software problem.
If the CD is known to be bootable and it won't boot, then it's very likely a hardware problem (such as the SATA cable or the drive itself). New stuff does break.]]]
HmccurdyDate...I did find a bootable CD it did not work. I don't have the luxury of accessing different computers.
[[[do you see it in the bios?
Can you boot from a bootable cd? please follow the steps described !]]]
Nobus...I do not see it in the BIOS itself nor device manager. Cannot boot from a bootable CD i do however see it when i start up my computer and it flashes i paused it it states...Serial_Ch1 Master: HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGH22LS40 . Sorry no computer to test it on.

ReubenLeach that may be but i am still under warranty it worked fine all month i just wanted to make sure what the problem was.

Nobus i reinstalled windows and i thought that needed to be done.

What you've said above means that your computer does detect the drive in the BIOS. Try installing the latest SATA drivers for your mainboard. If that does not work then your drive is faulty and you would need to replace it.

Bringing it back will keep you posted. I do need an IDE/ATA cable, can i buy just anyone or is there a specific one to my board?
Nobus I brought it back bought a Pioneer, also added some RAM had to remove graphics card to install the RAM when I fired up the machine to see If it would recognize the Pioneer nothing on the screen. Monitor is fine I tested it on friends PC. I don't know what happened just hope it's no my mobo.
Posting from my smart phone.
why would i not like Pioneer? no problems there - i only see :
1- you install pioneer
2- you report image = blank
so i think : pioneer cause ?
or you dislodged something else...

Ok the RAM was not seated correctly. Now back to Pioneer... Pioneer is not being recognized. Did not insert the disk yet . Not sure if disk are drivers or what. The disk says nero8 essentials Bundle with hardware only, i know what nero is, but are drivers on this disk as well? I wanna do this right this time!
Thanks guys but nobody even referenced this so... I will answer my own question: both are IDE/ATA, you have to set the jumpers on the the rear of the drives: on the one furthest from the board connector: "Master" and the other's jumper to "Slave."
Thanks to all who helped!

Surprised nobody suggested the last comment i posted, but thanks guys!

both are IDE/ATA
Oh. I thought we were talking about a SATA drive. Silly me thought it would use a SATA cable.
