The problem is that there is no sound, not on internal or external speakers!
On control panel->sound all is good, icon tray is good, volume is all the way up, when I click up and down volume on laptop I can here it beep!
I have windows xp sp2 and installed microsoft UAA and .NET 3.5 and now I am downloading xp sp3 (315MB)
any help would be really apreciated.

OK, in DM all looks good, when I show hidden drivers I saw one device 'serial' commented out but when I un-installed it and then re-checked for new hardware all was good!
I un-installed everything that could be un-installed under audio, and restarted machine, windows re-installed it all and all looks good again, but no sound still !!!

Might wanna download a copy of Knoppix, or any live CD, to see if sounds works outside of Windows..... Just to rule out an OS problem.....
Oh, and is the Windows Autio Service started, and set to automatic? start>run>services.msc>... ...

Windows AS is running, What do you mean, any live cd?
I would also need to install the driver for the audio device then wouldn't I, I mean it would be a hole other issue!
Or am I wrong?

this is live cd http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html download it and just boot from it what john mean is we want to see is this an operating system specific issue or not if yours sound works in live cd that means urs hardware is correct.
live cd means it will run an OS without installing on yours hard drive

Ok somehow I managed to play a sound track with Gnome player! And it gives all the indications that all is good except that there is actually no sound, which is making me suspect the audio chip is busted, but I'm not sure yet!

If the driver is already installed, uninstalling the DEVICE just rebuilds the registry configuration, using the existing driver....

Thank you everybody for your time,
I found the problem, it was an unplugged wire of sound blaster on the m.board!
