How much free space needed on datastore?

Hi,

How much free space is needed on the datastore in order for the VMs to run correctly!?

I've got an ESXi server with several VMs and their respective virtual hard disks. There's still 12 GB of free space left on the datastore. Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks. Yet suddenly some of them don't start anymore because there apparently not enough disk space anymore?

Can somebody please explain how this works to me ...

Thanks a lot,

Jerome

So this means that if I configure a VM with a HD of 80 GB and attribute 2 GB of RAM to it then I actually have to take into account at least 82 GB? Meaning I have to substract 2 GB of the 'free' space on the datastore?

So that 'free' space isn't really free?

yup pretty much, so the free space on datastore will be reduced by 2GB when you start that VM

Ah, ok ... wasn't aware of that. Looks like I have to transfer one VM then to free up disk space!

Thanks, mate.
