Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 and Service Pack 3
Trying to install SP3 onto a Windows XP MCE 2002 with SP2 installed currently.  Install goes smooth untill running process after install.  Says an error in updating your system has occured.  Click ok to undo changes to your system.  I have tried loading sp3 with a cd iso, and a version straight from windows update.  I have adiquate space on the HDD and removed internet explorer 8 and 7, as they have known issues.  Please advise.

Usually occurs with systems that have been in use for a long time .. and have unsupported drivers or software.

Id suggest a clean install and then upgrade to the SP3..   its better that it gives you an error rather than crashing your system

I have also read all of this from another Question in the KB.

tru3533:
You are probably successful in downloading Windows XP SP3.
You may be failing to install it.

Before starting, know where you can get help:

A place to get FREE support for SP3 installation issues *from Microsoft*
until April 2009...

Other than "Automatic Updates" or the Windows Update web page - how can you
get SP3?

Key things to note:
- Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP
SP3, you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer. To avoid this,
ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta version of Internet
Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP SP3.
If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows
XP SP3, uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows
XP SP3."
- Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows
XP Media Center Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media
Center Edition may malfunction. To avoid this, install Windows
XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If this issue has
already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Did all that and have some issues you believe might be related to SP3?
Check these out:

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

Workarounds:

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

5. You receive a "Stop 0x0000007E" error message after you upgrade to
Windows
XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer
(Revised 06 May-08): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888372

Some people have gotten an "Access Denied" message when trying to install
SP3... I suggest going straigh to Method 3 of this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

Good luck to you! You shouldn't need it, however, with just a little
planning. ;-)

Even after all of the reading and prep i still get this....

And there is no kind of code to tell me why this is happening.

SP32-20100217-131126.jpg

I would prefer not to do a full reinstall, but i will keep it in mind after all options are exhausted.  Lots of applications that i dont have the Installers for.  But if it has to be, it has to be.

Ofcourse one thing I can mention here. Through personal experience. The time that you spend on troubleshooting this issue will be much longer than reinstalling and updating...

(slip-streaming is advised which updates the installation disk to SP3 directly.)

C:Windows\Svcpack.log

Attach it here please.....The logfile will be ideal.....

Been through this link yet?

When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack, you receive the error message "Access is denied" or "Service Pack installation did not complete"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

Probably doesnt apply though, but here's another link anyway....

The installation fails, and an error code is logged in the Windows Update log file when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from Windows Update

Wow, been busy while I was posting.... Definately get us the logfile. Might be very easy to fix once we see any errors....

Disregard my links as well, cause you have already done your research... Sweeeet....

Secondly.... Make sure that the machines Spyware/Malware free, as suggested above.

Might even go as far as to uninstall SP2/reboot and reinstall that as well......

Last but not least...... Try running through SFC.....

Start>run>cmd.exe

sfc /purgecache
sfc /scannow

You WILL need the XP CD for this to complete...

Scannow sfc

I would definitely go with johnb6767 ... Good luck with resolving it :)

Ok. System is spyware/malware free.

Have done Repair install and SFC /scannow and repaired files.

Here is the log file.
Seems like in the log file it happens sometime when trying to access some kind of .NET framework thing before it fails. Hopefully this helps u to help me.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
