Backup Exec 12.5 unable to overwrite to external HD

I have several customers who use an external USB hard drive to back up their data nightly using Backup Exec 12.5.  In the process of doing this, we run into a problem.

If the drive fills up, even if the data is set to overwrite, the backup fails.  If I go in and delete some of the backups, the backups begin again, but only until the drive fills up.  Does anyone know of a way that we can stop this, where the data will automatically overwrite like it's supposed to?

Check http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/324190.htm.
If you're using the GRT option in your backups and are using a "Removable backup-to-disk" folder, that article could describe your problem. I believe Symantec are still working on a fix for this.
If this is your problem, a workaround would be to disable GRT in your backups or manually delete the backups.
