I have an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop running Vista Home Edition, and the DVD drive has disappeared from Computer and Disk Management. Any ideas on where I should start to restore it?

Ok. More seriously, the laptop is now switching itself off! That is, it is just dying. This is whether I'm in BIOS or Windows - just cuts out! Any ideas?!?

i don't know for how long have you used this laptop, but if it's new, have you seen the power options? maybe it's configured to turn off automatically after some time. about the dvd drive maybe it's been doing an automatic update and it has corrupted the registry file of the dvd. If it is vista, see the link below, it might help http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/201659-dvd-drive-icon-disappeared-computer-fix.html
