SBS 2003 VPN will not connect after router change
Error 800 when connecting to the VPN after changing the router.  Shows up after the "verifying username and password..."  New router is a Linksys WRT120N.  RDP to the server works fine.  Ports 3389, 1723 and 47 forwarded in the router to the SBS.  I can telnet to port 1723 and get a response.  PPTP passthrough is enabled.

Here is the event ID 20209 generated in the event log on the SBS:

A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client 24.220.xxx.xx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets.

I could try updating the firmware but this router is supported remotely.  Although I could likely walk someone through the firmware update process over the phone.

Any Suggestions??

Thanks

Katon

Hi,

Run Connect to the Internet Wizard on the server.

Also refer to: Fix My Network Wizard

I hope this helps,

GRE (protocol 47) is not the same as port 47.  But the PPTP Passthrough should handle the GRE.

You may want to re-run the Configure Remote Access wizard under the To Do List.

I've ran the CTIW and tried the VPN with no success.  Rebooted the server and tried again just to be sure.  I then ran the Configure Remote Access wizard and tried connecting.  Same error.

I'm beginning to think the router is not able to pass the traffic as the VPN was working before the router switch.  Also, this is SBS 2003.

Anything other suggestions or should I just replace the router with a different brand / model?

Well, if you have another router to swap out you can test whether the one you have right now is causing the issue.  I would find it odd however, as this is a newer unit and specs indicate there should be no problem.

Follow the steps on this page http://www.howtonetworking.com/VPN/testgre.htm to diagnose a little more.  The pptpclnt and pptpsrv apps that the article mention are located in the WinXP SP2 Support Tools which can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=49AE8576-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en

BTW, testing with those tools you will have to jump through some hoops with conflicting services, etc.  It might be easier to have one of the components on a workstation instead of the server.  Then again, by the time you work out all the kinks, you might have been able to replace the router a few times...

FIXED!

I updated the firmware in the router and then toggled the VPN passthrough radio button off then on.  After doing all that VPN is connecting and working great.

Thanks shreedhar and citacomp for replying.  Your suggestions were quite helpful in troubleshooting this issue.

Small Business Server (SBS) is a line of server operating systems targeted at small businesses by bundling the operating system with a number of other Microsoft products that would normally need to be purchased or licensed separately.
