How do I populate the data returned from an sql query in to an array?

I get the following error with the current code I am using -

"Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
' Grab existing filenames
        Dim x As Integer 'count of results
        Dim existingFileName() As String = Nothing
        SQLString = "SELECT FileNamePath FROM Files"
        SQLCommand = New SqlCommand(SQLString, SQLServer)
        SQLData = SQLCommand.ExecuteReader()
        Do While SQLData.Read()
            existingFileName(x) = SQLData.GetValue(0)
            x = x + 1
