How do I boost my signal strength Netgear wndr3300

Morning EE, I would like boost the signal strength on my Netgear wndr3300 router. It's a little weak for some of the laptops on the second floor. 2 laptops have wireless n built in the other I bought a netgear wireless n adapter. I have reduced signal noise as much as possible. My old Linksys g router had better signal strength in the excellent range, but would not go as far. I can use the laptop out by the pool, although I advise against this because at my sons pool party, the NEW Toshiba went swimming. Believe it or not, after two days of drying and me taking it apart and using a hair dryer it still worked. (lucky for him) lol. Is this a hardware (buy something) or software fix. I looked into DD-WRT but the risks are high, possibly bricking the unit during flash. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
