Philips DVD player doesn't recognize DivX video on USB device.

My girlfriend has just bought a Philips DVP3360 which allows playback of DIVX video from USB.

For some reason though it always says the USB stick is empty. If I burn the files to DVD they play perfectly.

In the instruction manual there is a statement that says

"You can only play DivX videos that were rented or purchased with the DivX registration code of this player"

I have no idea what this is about and it obviously isn't true as it will play any from DVD, but is it affecting USB playback and how do I get around it?
