webpage_colors

I have a web page with HTML table.
I mark up every second row with some color to make it easier to read.

The main webpage background color is yellow or FFFFE0. This is a standard i cant change,
I am using light grey for the 2nd row F2F2E4.

The grey looks fine on my pc but when i use a laptop home or another destop with dell ultascan i hardly see it.

Does the color display depend on the kind on monitor used or PC settings?

How can i pick a color that will look good and the same on most users PCs.

thanks,

one is old LCD monitor and another is an old dell latitude laptop. but i also see it very light on a new XP laptop monitor.

What gey color you recommend. I am also considering E0F8F7 (light blue).
any opinions. how do you calibrate the monitor.
I like the light grey-blue color used on slickdeals.net, which is EFF4F7, though I might darken it slightly.

You can calibrate your monitor using adobe photoshop's clibration tool or use an online calibration image reference such as http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php or http://www.displaycalibration.com

For an external monitor, you would want to access your monitors settings for brightness, contrast, color temperature, and color levels and make adjustments until the images show the intended colors and gradients.  For laptops usually you can also change the same color settings in the advanced section of your video card driver display settings.
