Voice Over IP Equipment

I would like to start moving my phones over to VOIP. I use Comcast cable for internet service, and of course they offer VOIP service, but I'd certainly consider any options. My main concerns are call quality, reliability, and the ability to transfer existing numbers to the VOIP service. Eventually I'd have 5 numbers switched over.

If I go with Comcast, do I have to purchase their modem, or can I use other equipment to facilitate this? I would assume I'd need some form of gateway between my modem and my phones (or purchase VOIP phones, I suppose).

Any assistance in this area is very much appreciated. I'm a complete novice in this area.
