Arcserve backup job stops claiming tape is full
I have a number of scheduled jobs on an Arcserve 12.5 on windows 2003 system using LTO4 tapes.
For the last couple of weeks one of the jobs stops after backing up 810GB exactly and it asks for a new tape to carry on the job.
The system uses LTO4 tapes which are 800/1600GB so it should go well up to 1100 or 1200 minimum as it does on other jobs, actually this same job was working fine on one tape up to a fortnight ago and the size of the backup hasn't changed, I can't figure out what has changed here.
I've checked the compression option on the options and I have it to compress data at the agent level, the settings are pretty much the same as on other jobs.
Any ideas?

You may be backing up the same data more than once. Are you traversing junction points?
PS - I'd switch off compression at the agent level, unless your network bandwidth is low. Using the hardware compression on the LTO is a lot more efficient in most circumstances

Thanks for the reply
How would i know if I'm traversing junction points?

In the advanced tab of teh global options for the job there is an option that reads 'Traverse directory junctions and volume mount points', this option is not selected.
Not sure if that's what you were asking

Ok, so it's not selected.
Has the nature of the data changed? The native capacity of LTO 4's is 800 GB - if you were backing up AVI and MP3 files then you'd expect to get very little more than the native capacity out of the tapes,

Sorry, not being very clear today. I meant, if you were backing up data that is already compressed - for instance, AVI and MP£ files - then you wouldn't get much more than the native capacity out of the tapes.

Sorry but this link doesn't take me anywhere (page cannot be found)

well, they all are .vbk files. Backup images from virtual machines.

THank you all
It seems these images will not compress. I've had to reduce the size of the backup data so it will now fit in one tape
