Excel crashes when opening a document

When I open a particular Excel spreadsheet sent by a client, Excel crashes.  I have tried to open this spreadsheet on many different computers on the network but it crashes on every one EXCEPT for my machines.  I wondered whether there was some corruption in the spreadsheet but if so, it wouldn't open on my machines.
The machines that it crashes on are all running XP and Excel 97 (old, I know) and are all but one desktop machines with the other being a laptop with additional security software (personal firewall etc.).
My machines are a desktop machine running Vista and Office 2007, but also a netbook running XP and Office 97.
I wondered about permissions given that I can open the spreadsheet on both of my machines (and I am the administrator), but I logged onto one of the other machines as administrator and Excel crashed when I tried to open the spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet is large at just over 2.5MB.  I have read about such problems, which have been put down to the large filesize and insufficient memory.  However, the machines that have the problem have 2GB memory and my netbook (a low powered machine, also with 2GB memory) can open it with no problems.  Further, I wouldn't expect a file size of 2.5MB to cause problems on a machine with 2GB memory that has 1.4GB available.
I have attached the error reported in the event log.
Not sure where to go with this but I need a quick response.
