How to disable validation except in 1 tabpanel?

Hello, I am stumped with this issue!!!

I have an asp.net website where I have a TabContainer with 2 TabPanels.  In tabpanel 1 I have textboxes and an asp.net button to submit data.  In tabpanel 2 I have an asp:RequiredFieldValidator control to validate a textbox before submitting that data via a button.

The problem i'm facing though is, if i'm in tabpanel 1 submitting data, the validator in tabpanel 2 is firing because that is blank.

I need to disable the validation unless if i'm in tabpanel 2, but I cannot enable/disable it via a postback.  I have been trying to do it via javascript, but I have had no luck at all.  (Javascript is not one of my strong points, though I know enough to be a little dangerous.)

Any suggestions?
