can't ping domain name, but can ping by ip address
hi,
i installed a server 2003 domain controller, my domain name is mylab.local / 192.168.0.32. On XP machine i can ping domain controller by ip address and server name (winserver1) but can't ping by domain name (mylab.local) and FQDN, therefor i can't join domain.
i have tried simple stuff like: ipconfig /flushdns and /registerdns; i have restart server; restart dns services; i made sure firewall is disables.
Thanks in advance.

Have you setup the forward and reverse lookups under the DNS settings in Windows 2003?

Hi
first of all you have to make an reverse zone then an an PTR record for it like if u have an 192.168.1.X reverse zone than PTR value woule be ip of this server like for instance 10
then in forward lookup zone in right pane in right click in blank area and select host record which is A record simply put the ip address of this server and leave name to its parent folder option so that it can pick up mylab.local and check the box below to creat its PTR record as well
after that refresh DNS or use f5 after clciking on DNS name of this server it might be winserver1 as u said above
then try to ping by domain name and make sure in this computer"s tcp/ip properties u have urs own computer ip
Cheers

Please check the ipconfig /all on server and winxp clients.
For Internal DNS server configuration Primary DNS address( On server & Desktop clients) should be Local Static IP address of Windows2003 server and ISP DNS address in forwarders tab of DNS server Management Console. And then try to add in Domain and also check any Antivirus Integrated Firewall is installed on Winxp PC.

The domain controller will need to have the rights to update the required SRV records for the new domain. If this is just a small lab of your own and you're playing about with it, the easiest way to achieve this is to have the DC run the DNS service. If not then you'll need to speak to whoever owns the DNS zone to ensure that the correct permissions are in place.
You should be able to find this all in great detail if you hunt around (try AD DNS SRV as a google search for example)
