VMWare converter fails error: reconfiguration failed

I am trying to p2v a remote box to a virtual ESX 4.0 server. I am using VMWare converter 4.0.1. I keep getting the error "reconfiguration failed. I have searched the logs, but cannot figure out what exactly is the problem. it seems to be a disk error. Sorry, I am a relative newbie to vmware products. I have uploaded the logs for review.

A few things to try, if you haven't done so already -> stop all processes/services writing to the physical host, including A/V software. Close out of the Converter tool and stop all converter type services on the machine Converter is installed on. Re-open converter (select 'yes' to restart server service). Retry the P2V. Is the error displayed within Converter? Does it complete then when you boot up the VM the error displays? What is the host OS you're trying to P2V?

I will try what you mentioned and report back. The errors is displayed in converter. It gets to 95% completion and fails. I can see the VM listed in the virtual center when connected to the ESX host, but it obviously does not boot, as the reconfiguration never completes. The OS of the Physical box is windows server 2003 SP2
OK...try those few things and let me know.

If it doesn't work, you can try Vizioncore's tool (http://downloads.vizioncore.com/) to see if it works. Sometimes Converter Standalone is 'flaky' in my opinion. :)

I have a similar issue myself. Just to add to the info, I'm also running the latest version of ESXi server on a Dell a Dell X5550.
I'm running vmware converter 4.0.1 from a Dell optiplex 755 workstation running XP Prof sp3.
The virtual machine in question is a vmware server 2.0 virtual machine. I"m trying to convert to to use in esxi. I've been doing it with the VM powered off. I've even copied the folder containing the virtual machine from the vmware server 2.0 to the local workstation i'm running the converter from, because of the errors i'm getting.
The conversion process is failing at 95% also with a "failed: unable to create......" error in VMware converter, a "delayed write failed" message from windows. I've attached some shots of the errors in question.
Hopefully this will help us all eventually.  :)

"-JT"...try the conversion as a 'Powered On Machine'.
Will do, wil post back in a few...
Actually "-JT"...don't mind assisting you, but 'piggy-backing' in another users question is frowned upon by EE. Please post a question and I'll work with you in your post.

sorry, just trying to consolidate. I didn't want to post another with the exact same question. But that is no problem. I doin't want to steal coolsports time.
I mean clexch's time....
Clexch,

2 things. When you do the P2V. Disable the options to shutdown the P2V Server and don't try to startup your VM. This may help. Is it a Linux or Windows Server that you are trying to P2V? What is the OS.

I already do not shut down the P server or startup the V server. I do not want to do either of these currently. And I already stated that the physical box is Windows Server 2003 SP2
Is your P2V failing always at the same % during the process? If so you can use this as a guideline:
1)Creation of the target virtual machine (VM) (0%-5%)
2)Preparing to Clone the Disk (5%-6%)
3)Cloning (6%-95%)
4)Post-cloning (95%-97%)
5)Customization/Reconfig (97%-99%)
6)Install Tools/Power On (99%-100%)

According to my experience doing P2V consolidation project for my clients, orginal physical disk errors are the main reason to cause the conversion to fail. there are few things you should check on your physical host before start the P2V conversion:
1) Make sure physical server doesn't have any partition not formatted or unassigned etc, this will cause the P2V to fail;
2) On the source server make sure the Workstation, Server, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper and VMware Converter services are running. On Windows XP and 2003 servers make sure the Volume Shadow Copy service is not disabled, by default it should be set to Manual. This service does not need to be running for Converter to work
3) Make sure your physical server has enough space on each partition at least 300MB free space, otherwise, it will fail; (some source say 200MB free, but i had failure with 200MB free space)
4) Once i had to reboot a windows 2000 server 3 times and the P2V finally succeed (don't ask me why) :) just experience with windows 2000, quite tricky
5) If you have OS mirroring enabled, break the mirrors;

hope this will give you something to try and move on with the consolidation.
Gd luck!!!

Coolsport00 - I tried to run the process with the services stopped, but this still failed.

bbnp2006 - I am going to try your suggestions this morning, and will post my results.
If "bbnp2006" suggestions don't work, try the vizioncore product.

Platespin's Powerconvert is a quite power convert as well, give that a try. I believe you can get limited number of free conversion with the trial version. I think the product is called Platespin Migrate now after the company was aquired by Novell.

Gd luck!
