Exchange tries to connect to the public domain name

WSBS 2008 Exchange installed. When a new user is added to the domain using Office 2007, the wizard looks for domain.com instead of domain.local.

This is a network that I took over yesterday. Oultook had been working with some problems but not perfectly (which is why I was called.) I found that the server had multiple certificates, and I deleted the ones that were not being used for the web site or RWW.

The server is an SBS 2008 and I did two things before the problem started.
1. Since it was clear that the server had not been set up using the Console, I moved the users and then used the Change Role Wizard.  I don't think this is the issue because the problem remains even if I create a new user via the Wizards.
2. I deleted several old or redundant SSL certificates.

Any thoughtsS

it may be a dns issue.
is the server setup as domain.local - plenty of people misunderstand and incorrectly configure the server as domain.com - which can still work but can be a right pain.

>>added to the domain using Office 2007

That was just poorly written statement. Dangling participle is what I think it's called.

At any rate, the user was added using the SBS Console and the user is using Office 2007 Outlook. As for the certificate, yeah, I installed a Thawte certificate but the previous tech had installed multiple self-signed certificates; probably in an attempt to get things to work.

The domain is domain.local and everything in EMC seems to be as it should when I compare setting by setting with other SBS 2008 servers I've setup.

I did find out that none of the users had been connected using http://connect or its equivilent so thanks for that heads up -- I would not have thought of that myself (somethings are too obvious.)

I did make some headway by changing the login methods to OAD and OAW but it seems all I did was push the problem to another area. So..... The client and I have decided that the best thing is to nuk the server and start all over again.

Thanks for all your help.

thanks, that's probably what I'd do is "punt" :-). You and the client will probably be much happier in the end.
It never ceases to amaze me how many sell their boss or customer on SBS and don't know how to use it. Especially SBS 2008 I say it over and over again you gotta use the wizards. SBS 2008 especially is the most integrated and complex SBS yet and it will fight back if you don't configure it properly, have a good day.
