Shut Down / Restart Issues

HI,  i have a Dell Precision T5500, less than 6 mts old and i am having restarting issues. I am using XP Pro. when i go to restart the machine it hangs on a black screen on the back side of the of the restart and it just hangs there until you press the on button on the front of the machine. Not sure what is going on? Any suggestions?

Try installing the UHPC
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582
And see whether the issue relates to unloading your profile.  The other issue you may have is that the registry is being processed delaying the shutdown process.

this happens whether you are logged in as administrator or anyother user. i have also just tested by logging in and then restarting with out doing anything else.
Did this start happening after a particular application install or a windows patch/update?

Running registry cleaner or something similar may cure the problem.  The issue is that we have no clear picture of what your exact issue is.  I.e. an application that is running and does not want to exit.
Look at the running services on the system.  Prior to restarting, stop one of the services and then restart.  When you stop the right service prior to restart, the restart will occur quicker. this way you will know which service/application is hanging around and does not want to be terminated.  You can then determine whether you need this application or not and additional options might be available to you.
The issue you may run into when trying to stop this service is that it does not want to stop which is likely what happens during the system  shutdown/restart.
Try while in the restart process and looking at the black screen, hit control-alt-delete and see whether the taskmanager will pop up where you can see the process that is hanging around or whether the system just fals through and reboots/powersoff.

very clever arnold, maybe you can help me with one of my issues. I just posted it this morning and it is totaly unrelated but no one with any good solutions are responding. This is the link:

it seems to always have been like this. i never noticed after installing a new program or updating one. I will try the stoping of one service at a time during reboot and see what i find. This will take me a bit of time. I will get back shortly with information.  Thanks!!
Thank you all for your suggestions. The problem was with the BIOS. I just reloaded the bios defaults and that worked.
Thank you for suggesting flash the bios! it def was with the bios!
