Changing the HELO banner on Exchange 2007 Hub Transport Server

We have an environment of 1 CAS server, 2 MBX servers, 2 HT servers. We have an issue because the banner that is sent out is servername.domain.local, not servername.domain.com. This causes issues with certain servers that look to see if the external and internal name of the servers are the same. I know where to change this on both the receive and send connectors but when changing this to the external name, the HT servers stop working and mail just sits in our queues. Change the setting back the .local name and all mail flows without issue. What is the CORRECT way of changing this setting on a hub transport server that doesn't share any roles?

Thank you Jos for your quick response but that blog is in reference to setting this on Exchange 2003 virtual servers. The process is quite different on Exchange 2007 though and that is what we are having the issue with. Thanks again!
oops, my bad. Really thought it was 2007.. :(
