Connecting Windows 7 to XP network

In my XP network I connect to other computers by right clicking on "My Network Places" - then typing the IP address of the other PC (see attached pic) - which is in my private network

How do I do just that with Windows 7? (i.e. finding other computers by their IP address?)

There are articles about connecting Win 7 to XP, but they all talk about changing workgroup names, homegroup, etc.

I just want to connect to another IP address (in my provate network), as I have been doing for years now.

1. Run regedit.
2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

3. Create a DWORD value under Lsa

LmCompatibilityLevel

4. Set the value to 1
5. quit regedit
5. from Start/Run type gpupdate /force

And then what?  Where in the Win 7 user interface do I have something analogous to "Search for Computer" where I can type in the other PC's IP address?
after you change the DWORD
go and do what was you did before

in windows 7 you can't access the shared network untill you change the DWORd
Didn't work.  Still doesn't find the XP machines
first try to ping it from cmd

then in "network and sharing" select "connect to a network" and let it detect it

if that doesnt work
in run type

//I.P. address//foldername

note:foldername of folder that is shared
also try making some folders publicallly shared

One more thing you can do is try to access your computers ffrom other
id you succeed in that then you will find win 7 detecting those xomputer

if none of the above work use
this software   below

IP MESSENGER

http://www.ipmsg.org/index.html.en

install software on both computers and let your ip's be dynamic
not tested on static so dont know whether static ip will work or not
