Move Server 2003 SOA to 2008 R2

I have an old 2003 Server and want to remove it from the domain.  it is the DNS server and SOA.  I'm looking for some direction on how to move this info from the 2k3 server onto the 2k8 server then remove the 2k3 server altogether.

This server is the SOA.  By demoting it will it auto remove, or move the SOA to the new Server?

I also understood I had to use Zone Transfers to get it to the Server 2k8 r2 server?
And yes DNS is installed on the 2k8 R2
Ok then you first have to prep your forest/domain for bringing in the 2008 DC

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731728(WS.10).aspx

Note:  I'm guessing your 2003 box is x32 so make sure to use  adprep32

Then you can install promote the 2008 box.  Now when you install DNS then wait for replication and DNS will automatically replicate to the box.  Also make the box a global catalog (default choice in dc promo in 2008).   Transfer FSMO roles.

Point your clients (static and DHCP) to the new box for DNS.

I'd just take the 2003 box offline or shutdown the port for a day or two.  Make sure everything still works and if you are good to go then demote it using dcpromo.

Thanks

"I also understood I had to use Zone Transfers to get it to the Server 2k8 r2 server?"

Do you have other zones other than the active directory integrated zones.  The ADI zones will automatically replicate.

Thanks

Mike
I'm not sure I understand the difference between a regular zone and an ADI zone.  it is one domain with 7 servers in it (4 DC's) and the 2k3 server is very old and untimely so with the installation of the 2k8 server, I'm ready to demote it and take it offline.  my two concerns are the DNS zones and the SOA which this old 2k3 server is defined as.

The 2k8 server is already a DC and the DNS role is installed on it.  It is not a GC at this point, but can be.
I don't know for sure but don't believe other 'non-default' zones have been added.  is there a specific reason that would have occurred?  For another forest, etc.?
btw to my knowledge the only zone the 2k3 server contains is for the local domain.
If you right click on your zone and select properties you will see, type.  It will tell you there if the zones are active directory integrated

You could also run dnscmd /enumzones  storage will be AD-Domain for AD Integrated zones.

Thanks
