Preparation for Migration SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 does fail for Exchange
Hi there,
I'm running the migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. First preparation went well; installation of SBS 2008 went well; SBS 2008 is running fine and now I try to migrate but I can't migrate the mailboxes from the wizard; Continue is grayed.
Back tot sbs2003 and reran the migration preparation tool; first two items are fine (change Scheme and Lisence support ); exchange configuration for migration is not OK and gets a red cross in front.
Whatever I tried ... no luck and i'm running out of time; day 15 of 21 ...
Is there someone who can help me??

Hi Philip,
Thanx for your reply.
Yes, i made a backup of all ... but that was 2 weeks ago. From then on, on a daily base a backup was made ... and the previous ones are overwritten. Yes ... I know ... stupid. But that's life. I thought all was running wel and smooth. It never came up to me of keeping that initial backup ...
In the meantime I have removed the Symantec Mail Security for Exchange ... to no avail.
Still the message cannot prepare Exchange.
The SBS BPA was run and OK; in the meantime 5 errors regarding the fact that SBS03 is not the Domain Naming master; infrastructure master; primary Domain COntroller MAster; RID master and SChema master. All because of the changes made ...
If I look at the report just before the migration: all is OK except some warnings about diskspace, Dayligth saving time. EDNS being enabled; SBSMon and Sharepoint not being SQL 2000 SP4 and SBS 2003R2 tech is installed.
In short .... what to do.

What is the error specifically about disk space? That will cause problems.
Did the connectors get created for Exchange between SBS 03 and 08? Reference the latter part of the migration guide for a screenshot.
Do you have any in-place SMTP forwarders besides the default SBS Virtual SMTP one?

diskspace C; drive: 4.7 from 18.7 GB; data drive: 105 from 130 GB ... should be ok I guess.
There is a connector SBS03 - SBS08 in both exchange servers.
just the basic SBS VIrtual SMTP .
HOwever in Tools from the SBS2003 ex sys manager I see that the SBS2008 Server is unreachable .... message: unable to connect to the WMI service. You will not able to see the current status of the monitored resources and can not add disk or service monitoring resources. ID no: c1038692 Exchange system manager.
And ... might it be that although Exchange SBS 2003 is in NAtive mode he still thinks it is Mixed mode???

Are you logged in with the default 500 administrator account on SBS 2003 when you log in? Not a different domain admin account that was created after the fact.

yes, the one and only original 500 administrator.
Although there is a same SID with _Classes addition .... not sure if that is OK.

Rerunning the migration tool will not work once you have your SBS 08 OS in place.
Can you post the migration log from c:\Program Files\SBS\...\Logs please?

just checked the domain and forest: both are at highest level: Windows 2003.
If you mean: you cannot rerun the preparation tool ... how then to continue with the SBS2008 exchange prepare tool if Continue is grayed out ....
Perhaps delete the whole server and rerun the installation? Will that work?
Will I be able to gain a few more days by deleting the SBS 2008 server? Guess not ....

an other additional comment: with the initial / first run of the preparation tool all three items were check and tested OK.

Philips, Sorry, I cant find the folder C:\Program Files\Small Business Server\...\Logs\
But there is a folder called "C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs" with lots of files.
When running the migration wizard only the file MigrationWizard.txt is changed/added. From that file I have copied the most recent part some posts above.
So if that is wrong; please tell me waht you want / need? Sorry for the misunderstanding ...

When the SBS 08 install finished did you see a green check mark indicating a successful install or an exclamation mark indicating that there were errors?
