Exchange fails intermittently on SBS 2008 Migrated domain

About every week or so, our SBS 2008 decided that Exchange 2008 must stop working. No services or processes crash, however, it's almost as if the SBS forgets that it's a DC.

Here's the DCDIAG once the problem occurs:

When the server is working, I'm not noticing anything out of the ordinary in the event logs, etc. The server seems to run without issue.

Now, this was a migration from a SBS 2003 domain and I'm wondering if something was not done quite right during the migration. But like I said, this problem is very infrequent and I really don't know where to start looking. Maybe somewhere in AD?

Basically, a restart clears all (visible) issues. Once it's rebooted, Exchange works, etc.

I've attached a couple of docs with screenshots of the event logs that may be useful.

Please see this prior post that may or may not be related to this issue: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/Q_25140024.html

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I didn't think NETDIAG was supported on 2008. Is there a way to make it run on 2008?

I see , nothing is showing on this last test except problems with Read only domain option . you can verify overall helath on your domain and active diretory by using  Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=dd7a00df-1a5b-4fb6-a8a6-657a7968bd11

Also try using  the SBS 2008 BPA, it will detect more unoticebale issues :
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=130639
if the error happens frequently  then record the time of event and check eventlogs on server , you will get more docummentaion to help with issue

all of the warnings are not serious , but you should take care of them if you have a chance  one by one to improve performaqnce.

The most important issue is the DNS warning and SP2 update . if the dns is not configured properly then you will get so many probllems :
The DNS name server records do not exist :
The forward lookup zone yourdomain.local does not contain any DNS name server (NS) resource records with SERVER.yourdomain.local for the _msdcs delegation.

verify if an NS record exists .  Also update to SP2 if you have a chance when not in production and make sure you back up before you apply the update . :) . do you have any  errors in event viewrs matching the same time the error happned ?
0
robklubsAuthor Commented:
The NS record did exist. I added one for just the server name, not the FQDN. See attached pic.

Does that look right to you?

I will install SP tonight (hopefully). Is there any harm in installing SP2 for Windows even though we're running SBS? There were issues in prior versions but I'm not sure if there are any for 2008.

I see , that is weired .  if it is still  failing at that specific time then record event viewer erros.

As for windows SP2 update there is no problems upgrading it ,I did more than 5 upgrades on SBS with no problems ,  just make sure that you have a good back up before doing so.
Microsoft always require that you have the latest Service pack before even they can assist or support you :)

I will do SP2 and report back.

If you take a look at the Word docs I first attached to this post, you'll see the errors in the event log that started and coincided with the issues. Not sure if you'll be able to see anything - the errors started in the early AM.

adiloadiloCommented:
yes I saw them those erros they are from adaccess , and they prove that your server is having problems talking to the domain controller . for you situation you are using an SBS server , this means that all your services : ( active diretory , dns , dhcp , etc ) are on the same server . the exchange server is having problems locating a domain controller so all exchange dependencies fail.
so what you have to do is to verify that :
-local dns settings on the server , change your dns servers on the sbs to point to 127.0.0.1 or the local  ip address , them set up forwarders to a public dns .
-NS Records are they  working properly ? use nslookup to verify  if they are not working also dcdiag /DnsAll   to check that all records exist .
-you can also delete the _msdcs.domail.local and recreate it to fix the ns records on the domain , do that only if off-hours :) , follow these steps to recreate the _msdcs.cheverielaw.local

1. Right click on the _msdcs.cheverielaw.local zone and then click Delete to
delete this zone.
2. Right-click Forward Lookup Zones in DNS and select New Zone.
3. Specify Primary Zone, and use _msdcs.cheverielaw.local  as the Zone name.
4. Stop Netlogon and DNS services.
5. Rename %windir%\system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files to
other name.
6. Start Netlogon and DNS service
7. Run "ipconfig /flushdns" and "ipconfig /registerdns" (without the
quotation marks) in command prompt window.
8. Close and reopen the DNS snapin.
9. Verify _msdcs.domain.local contains dc, domains, gc, and pdc.

Good luck

I recreated the _msdcs as you suggested. The steps went fine but now I'm seeing the following in the event viewer (Application):

Event 1202,SceCli
Security policies were propagated with warning. 0x534 : No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.

Advanced help for this problem is available on http://support.microsoft.com. Query for "troubleshooting 1202 events".

Error 0x534 occurs when a user account in one or more Group Policy objects (GPOs) could not be resolved to a SID.  This error is possibly caused by a mistyped or deleted user account referenced in either the User Rights or Restricted Groups branch of a GPO.  To resolve this event, contact an administrator in the domain to perform the following actions:

1.      Identify accounts that could not be resolved to a SID:

From the command prompt, type: FIND /I "Cannot find"  %SYSTEMROOT%\Security\Logs\winlogon.log

The string following "Cannot find" in the FIND output identifies the problem account names.

Example: Cannot find JohnDough.

In this case, the SID for username "JohnDough" could not be determined. This most likely occurs because the account was deleted, renamed, or is spelled differently (e.g. "JohnDoe").

2.      Use RSoP to identify the specific User Rights, Restricted Groups, and Source GPOs that contain the problem accounts:

a.      Start -> Run -> RSoP.msc
b.      Review the results for Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment and Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Restricted Groups for any errors flagged with a red X.
c.      For any User Right or Restricted Group marked with a red X, the corresponding GPO that contains the problem policy setting is listed under the column entitled "Source GPO". Note the specific User Rights, Restricted Groups and containing Source GPOs that are generating errors.

3.      Remove unresolved accounts from Group Policy

a.      Start -> Run -> MMC.EXE
b.      From the File menu select "Add/Remove Snap-in..."
c.      From the "Add/Remove Snap-in" dialog box select "Add..."
d.      In the "Add Standalone Snap-in" dialog box select "Group Policy" and click "Add"
e.      In the "Select Group Policy Object" dialog box click the "Browse" button.
f.      On the "Browse for a Group Policy Object" dialog box choose the "All" tab
g.      For each source GPO identified in step 2, correct the specific User Rights or Restricted Groups that were flagged with a red X in step 2. These User Rights or Restricted Groups can be corrected by removing or correcting any references to the problem accounts that were identified in step 1.

Following those steps, I get the following:

The Event 1202 is showing up twice every 5 minutes . . . .

We are running a SQL 2008 database which seems to be working, but I'm a bit concerned. What do you think?

Hi I  just read your comment , that ip is ok it is just an IP6 IP address , if you don`t use ip6 on your network then disable it in the network settings . as for the error you getting for the Event 1202,SceCli , I don`t think changing dns settings will cause that error . can you run that tool you ran before : Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner ?  DNS will not cause that error it is related to active directory .
first disable ip6 if not used ,  reboot server or run ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /registerdns . then run dcdiag .

there should be an old account with bad SID which causing those erros look for it and delete or recreate it.

First of all, thanks for the quick responses and for all the help.

I rebooted the server without removing IP6. It shouldn't be causing me any issues. After the reboot, I was able to login and all domain services appear to be working.

HOWEVER, my domain clients can't connect to GP. The can ping "server", but not "server.cheverielaw.local"

The IT Scanner came back clean again.

The BPA came back WITHOUT the DNS error which is great. There were, in my view, a few minor issues. 9 in total but none looked important or pertinent to this issue.

However, the Event 1202 is back every five minutes. According the its instructions, it "can't find" three objects:

        Cannot find MSSQLSERVER.
        Cannot find SQLSERVERAGENT.
        Cannot find MSSQLFDLauncher.

I think these are tied to SQL but an not sure. I found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977695/EN-US) but am not sure if it applies to me.

I'm feeling better, but lingering errors in the log make me uneasy. Again, your insight is greatly appreciated.

thanks , that is how we learn , from troubleshooting :)

do you have windows 2008 r2 ? if not then don`t apply that hotfix , if you upgrade  to service pack 2 , it should take care of all those hotfixes .if you are not upgrading yet to sp2 then try this one istead for windows 2008 not 2008 r2   :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975566
that may fix the issue :) if you have sql server  enabled on same box .

<< HOWEVER, my domain clients can't connect to GP. The can ping "server", but not "server.cheverielaw.local" >>>  for this  try ping -a ipaddress  on one of the clients if it resolves to "server" and not "server.cheverielaw.local" then they may just need a reboot , reboot and try again if that still did not work then check if they are pointing to the right dns server with  "ipconfig /all"  also verify if you have wins enabled , that may be another issue which conflicts with dns.

This may be a stupid question, but how do I tell if I have R2? I don't see that badge anywhere . . . . the OS is listed as Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard FE 6.0.6001 SP1.

Disregard that domain client message. My fault, I had tested from two computers that I somehow had miskeyed the DNS server.

try  start >> run  and type  winver   , a window will pop up with windows 2008 version ,
apply the patch depending on what version you have .
good luck

robklubsAuthor Commented:
Ok, it's not R2. I'm going to wait to load SP2 for tomorrow. I'll let the backup do it's thing tonight this way I have something to fall back on.

robklubsAuthor Commented:
For some reason SP2 is not loading through the software update services. If it doesn't show up in the next day or so I'll download and install manually.

I'll post back if I have any trouble after that or if a repeat issue happens. Hopefully the DNS recreate fixed the issue.

Thanks.

Won't know for sure if the issue is fixed for at least a week, but am confident that adiloadilo gave me good info to fix.
