Export Mailbox to PST with Exchange 2007

Hello all:

Trying to export a few mailboxes to a .pst file.  The server is in another location and as far as we can tell the Firewall rules are setup to allow any and all traffic to and from the PC I am using to try the Export-Mailbox command from.  The Exchange Server itself and the other PC I am using (64 bit on the server) are both in the "Exchange Servers" security group.  When the Export-Mailbox command is run I get this following error and Diagnostic info.  PLease help...

Export-Mailbox : MapiExceptionNetworkError: Unable to make admin interface conn
ection to server. (hr=0x80040115, ec=-2147221227)

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you run the command directly on the exchange server via remote desktop to better diag this command?

No the Exchange Server is running the 64 bit OS and the command will not work.  Already tried and found that the solution was to install the admin tools on a 32 bit os system and run the command from there.

Yes running the command
Export-Mailbox -Identity <userID> -PSTFolderPath s:\pstexport\file.pst

Exchange Server running SP2 client PC running SP1.  That does not make a difference does it???

The command should work directly on the servers exchange shell.  What error did you get when you remoted and ran the command directly on the servers exchange shell interface?

Here is what I get when run from the Server itself...

You are running on a 64-bit computer. To export to or import from a .pst file,
you must be running a 32-bit computer that has Outlook 2003 SP2 or later instal
led.
At line:1 char:1

I must say in over 15 years of Windows System Administration this is the most absurd of all of the things I have seen Microsoft do.

This is the command I use from a 32 bit workstation.

Export-Mailbox -globalcatalog server.contoso.net -Identity "alias" -PSTFolderPath "c:\exmergedata\alias.pst"

Same error with -globalcatalog and the FQDN of my primary DC.  I also tried it with the DC that is serving the Exchange Server as well.

Woah, yea, I'm running it from my bes which is 32bit and outlook installed.  I'm looking to see if I can duplicate.

Can you add yourself to the Exchange Admins group....  and retry.

Then we may need to look at other things like IPV6... but run the Best Practices tool would also be recommended.   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=DBAB201F-4BEE-4943-AC22-E2DDBD258DF3&displaylang=en

Already in the Exchange Admins group and we are not running IPV6 anywhere.

Have you tried from a different work station? is the DC you are using a global catalog?

Ok, lets give yourself full access to the mailbox you're exporting...

Add-MailboxPermission –Identitiy “MailAlias” –User Username –AccessRight FullAccess

and then remove it, once done.

Remove-MailboxPermission –Identitiy “MailAlias” –User Username –AccessRight FullAccess
