WSUS 3.0 downstream server

I just finished creating a WSUS downstream server and I set it as a replica server. Does this mean Updates will come from either the Upstream Or Downstream server depending on what I set in the GPO? I see on my Downstream server all my groups are added and the same as my Upstream. No machines have populated yet, will eventually all the machines populate?

Since it will take awhile for the clients to report in(up to 22 hours) you can use the .bat below which should get them reporting in minutes.
%Windir%\system32\net.exe stop bits
%Windir%\system32\net.exe stop wuauserv
%Windir%\system32\net.exe stop cryptsvc

del %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log /S /Q

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v AccountDomainSid /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v PingID /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v SusClientId /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v LastWaitTimeout /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v DetectionStartTime /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /v NextDetectionTime /f

rd /s /q %windir%\softwareDistribution
%Windir%\system32\net.exe start cryptsvc
%Windir%\system32\net.exe start bits

Downstream server will pull all the approved updates you set.   Then whatever you set on the GPO for the workstations to point to which server should contact that WSUS server to see if there are updates.

As far as the gpo...if you run gpupdate /force    this will update the policy....then run rsop.msc to see if the GPO policy has been applied...if not you have a GPO linking issue.

when I create the Downstream server and I changed one of the groups to point to the new Downstream server, it puts the machines in unassigned computers. Is this normal?

How did you configure your client side targeting? Are you using Group Policy/registry or the WSUS console?

I am using Group Policies.

Did you configure WSUS as below?

Thomas NSystems Analyst - Windows System AdministratorAuthor Commented:
I need to do this on the Downstream server? I thought since it was a replica I would not have to do that. I just checked the Group Policy option.
Thomas NSystems Analyst - Windows System AdministratorAuthor Commented:
hopefully that works
