Control central heating for pc

Hi experts, I'm a software developer who develops with visual studio (vb.net, c#). I want to develop a pc software for my home automation system that will allow me to turn my hot-water and heaters on from a pc. Is this possible? Is there a Central Heating Controller out there equipped with some sort of wireless protocol or serial port that can make my dream a reality?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have often thought of doing the same thing as you.  If you google usb relay controller / serial ethernet etc.

a lot of these products come with their own dll / APIs to make the coding easier.
