If you plug an external USB HDD into the 2008 Standard R2 server, the drive shows up in Computer Management/Disk Management, however you have to manually assign a drive letter every time.  Is there a fix for this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Each time I have seen this before it turned out that my USB device had hijacked an already used drive letter.

Yes, reformat the drive. Delete the partition on it and create new one. Since then it should work.
