SharePoint 2007 Conditional Formatting on user logon

Is it possible using conditional formatting in SharePoint designing to make fields read only on forms based on the user which is logged in i.e. I know you can do this based on the permissions they are assigned but the problem I have is that users have the same permissions but are only allowed to change certain fields.

Is this possible and if so how?

Not sure I understand - you can use audiences or you use sample from this link:

If your fields are coming from lists is possible if you use this: http://www.codeplex.com/SPListDisplaySetting.
Hope that helps.
