Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 v2.0 interaction with AIM.

Can Office Communicator 2007 v2.0 users see the availability status of AIM users?  It is understood that a PIC License must be purchased but currently I am just concerned with this specific detail.

- Please advise as to a better zone that this could be posted in.  thanks.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

From what I can see in the Communicator 2007 R2 help files, AOL, Yahoo! and MSN IM addresses can be added to the Communicator contacts list.

The preferred method to add these contacts in via Outlook, however I am not sure if additional configuration is needed on the OCS server to allow non-federated IM accounts to work as I tried adding my MSN account to Office communicator and was not successful.

When trying with a google talk account, I got a message about the address not being federated, MSN just showed an error about not being available.

A provisioning process must first be completed before enabling Public IM Connectivity (PIC) for the public IM partners AOL, Yahoo, and MSN/Live.
See this guide for more details on how to initiate the process:

Once the domains have been provisioned (can take up to 30 days from time of request) and you've deployed an Access Edge server you will be able to see Presence information for PIC users.  That said, in practical use I often see invalid presence information for AIM users on my contacts list, it's not uncommon to have conversations with people who appear offline.  But most times the presence states will be reflected correctly.

Also GTalk requires a separate OCS role, the XMPP Gateway, to be deployed and configured to allow Federation between OCS and Gmail/Jabber gateways.
