I have no idea why but I can't open txt files anymore and I can't start TextEdit anymore :-(
If I start TextEdit it comes up, shows a document and than displays an error message.

What can I do?

Thank you for ever tip.

I would run disk utility -> repair permissions.

And if that doesn't work, try booting while holding down the shift key to do a safe boot. That will also automatically run a disk repair.

How about repair permissions, on the other side in disk utility?

Try opening TextEdit from a different user account (you can setup a temporary guest account fairly easily). If it works there then it has something to do with the permissions.

If it still does not open then try reinstalling it from the Mac OS X install disc.

The clue to what has occurred with Text Edit, is listed on line 19 of the CrashReporter thread you have provided: "Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)".

This more than likely is just an indication of a launch (temporary internal fatal error)  failure of Text Edit to application.

Sometimes this can also be an unrecoverable error where more intensive steps may need to be taken to resolve this, but I don't think that is the case here. Not from what I see in the error log so far.

This culprit may be an issue with the current preferences list ("plist") for Text Exit getting corrupted.

So what you may want to try doing is:

* Click anywhere on a blank space of your desktop and then look near the Apple menu icon and you should now see the Finder near the Apple menu icon.

* From the Finder menu bar, click on Go>Home. This will open up your Home Folder. Click on the Preferences folder.

* Within the Preferences folder locate and remove com.apple.textedit.plist to the Trash

* Now close all windows and open applications, click back on the Apple menu icon and select Logout<username>. This will take you to the main login screen. Simply log back in to the same user account.

* Before you attempt to launch TextEdit, however, run Disk Utility right from with the Finder>Go>Utilities (folder) and launch Disk Utilities and run a repair permissions on your Mac OS X volume now.

* Once you have successfully run Disk Utility with no errors found (in red) at the end of the procedure, quit this utility application.

Now attempt to launch Text Edit and see if these simple steps have helped restore Text Edit back to its normal functionality.

This is just a preliminary procedure, if this does not help just let us know.

Sounds good, Mactechtrainer !
I had a chat with an Apple tech guy but he wasn't able to come up with that idea.
I thought, as TextEdit shows a file I'd only need to delete it. But I have no idea where to find the file.
Cheers !!!
I try that as soon as I will be in front of my Mac (in like one month time, because my Mac is in California and I am in Europe at the moment).

When I click Go>Home there is no Preferences folder in my Home directory.  ???  :-(

There are two different "Preferences" folders.

One is located at:

The other is located at:

The first one is for preferences exclusively for your single user account where as the second one is consistent to all users on the hard drive. Make sure to check both locations for your TextEdit preference file.

My apologies, I left out Library from the path!

You will need to click Go>Home>Library

This will take you to the user Library folder for your user account.

Then, from within the Library,  you can select Preferences and find then remove these two plists:

Now you can then close all open windows and applications, logout of this
User account to the main login screen and then simply log back in.

Once you log back in and before you attempt to launch Text Edit, now would be the
time to run Disk Utility from within your user account (not from the disk):

Go to Finder Menu bar
• Click Go > Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility app.
• Click on Macintosh HD volume (or on the name you have changed
                                 this volume to.)
• Select "Repair Disk Permissions"

**Let Disk Utility run this repair permissions until completion
(This is not often a necessary step, but in the many of the hands-on software and Mac OS X troubleshooting I have done on Macs, I almost always run it just because it does repair a good number of the permissions on files which can sometimes affect how certain applications, files and folders work. It also optimizes your Mac's performance as well.)

Once Disk Utility is complete and there are no errors in red in the completion summary, quit Disk Utility.

• Now go into your Applications folder, or your Dock if you have Text Edit alias (shortcut) there,
and attempt to launch Text Edit.

Update this post to note the outcome.

Well DistributedServices,

Because TextEdit is a built-in text editior in Mac OS X and after carefully studying the Crash log you provided, it appears the Text Edit application (especially considering you cannot locate the Text Edit plist in User/Library/Preferences/) may be corrupted.

First things first, I would recommend you update your Mac OS X 10.6.2 version, to the current and latest Snow Leopard update - Mac OS X 10.6.3.

To do this simply click on the black Apple menu icon, located in the upper left corner of your screen and select Software Update.

You should see the Mac OS X 10.6.3 update installation file in that window. Run it and all updates (recommended).

Once the update to 10.6.3 is completed and you have rebooted back to your desktop, attempt to launch Text Edit. Sometimes OS X updates like these can repair a damaged Mac OS X application (like Text Edit), by simply updating the affected application with a newer version with the new Mac OS X update.

I would therefore recommend you do attempt to create a new user (as previously advised by StuJo7 earlier in this post) first, log-in to that new user and try to launch Text Edit in that test new user account.  Below I have provided steps for you, in order to create a new user to test this application.

Please note- the objective of creating a new user when troubleshooting, is to determine in such as case as yours, whether the issue with Text Edit not launching, is a User-specific issue, impacting only the user account you are using, or is it System-wide issue which impacts all user accounts on your Mac.

-CREATING A NEW ADMIN USER- (for troubleshooting purposes)

• Click on the Apple menu icon in upper left corner of your screen. Now select System Preferences from the drop down menu.

• From within System Preferences, select Accounts
• When the Accounts window opens, click on the padlock icon
at the bottom left corner and enter your Admin User
password for your Mac, when the dialog box pops up.

• Once you have full access to the Accounts window, click the "+" button, which is located just above the padlock you just clicked.

• Create an new user with the User name "test" and password "test or "password" as a generic password.

• Make sure to click the check box for "allow user to administer this computer", to make sure this test user has full Administrator rights.

• Once you have committed this new user, quit System Preferences and all open windows and applications.

• Now once again, click on the Apple menu icon and select
Logout <your username>, located at bottom of the menu, and you will be logged out.

•From the login window that you are at now, select the New User account you just made and with your generic password, log in to that account.

• Now go into the Applications folder in this new account and attempt to launch the Text Edit application.

** If it works, then the launching issue with TextEdit is a User-Specific issue, which means it is only your user account which is not working with the Text Edit application. Should the Text Edit not launch in your new user account however, then this is a System-wide issue and therefore, your Text Edit application very well may be corrupted.

If this is a User Specific issue with this application, let me know.

If however, it is a System-wide issue with Text Edit, in order to get this application back to normal operational functionality in Mac OS X 10.6 then here is your final option to bring back Text Edit: Run an Archive and Install.

My recommendation for this issue, is that you use the Archive and Install procedure to resolve this issue.

What this process consists of (using your Mac OS X install disc),is removing the damaged or corrupted Mac OS X directory and replacing it with a brand new directory.

This procedure also allows you to save your applications, files and folders without the old directory interfering with you then accessing those files.

• Start up from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or Install DVD. Please remember to use the install disc that matches the current operating system your system haves.

Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key.
• Hold the C key until you see a White screen, with a Gray Apple icon and eventually a Spinning gear.
• Release the C key only after you see the Spinning gear.

-Your mac will now boot from the disc and load into the Installer environment.

• Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X
 Installer window appears.
• Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
• Follow the prompts until you get to the licensing agreement screen
• An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with
the license agreement, click Agree. Then Select a
  Destination window appears.
• Click the volume that you wish to install to (your primary
  hard drive).
• Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
• Select Archive and Install.
• Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
• You should also select Preserve Users and Network  Settings, to preserve network and Home directory
• Click OK.
• Click Continue to begin the installation.

• Once the Archive and Install is completed, when you reach your desktop, be
sure to run all Software updates to bring your new  Mac OS X directory back
   up to current.

Now, go into your Applications folder once again and attempt to run the Text Edit application.

Additionally, if you wish to locate other previous files or folders before the Archive and Install was performed, just look inside your Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop, and locate a folder entitled "Previous System Folder," which will contain all of your previous Home folder files prior to the Archive and Install.

Here is the link (below) from Apple for more information about how to locate the Previous System Folder

How to locate Previous System Folder (after Archive and Install)

I hope this helps!
