SBS 2008 Lost All Our Incremental Backups

Hello,

We have a SBS 2008 server which we run a backup on nightly.  The backup is incremental across three drives.

This morning we found that SBS 2008 had wiped out all backups on the drive, and ran a single full backup, wiping out our historical backups.

Prior to today, our drives had been erasing the oldest incremental backup to make room for the newest.  Our full backup size is 100 GB, our drives are 320 GB drives, and on average, each incremental backup is 3 GB.

What could cause this to happen.  We planned our backup strategy around having the incremental backups as historical points.  After seeing them all wiped out suddenly, we are having serious reservations about SBS 2008's built in backup.

Thanks for any advice you have

Was the backup job scheduled to perform a full backup?  Or was this unexpected?

Or is the only unexpected behavior that the drive was overritten.  My hunch is that the drive was not protected and that "overwrite if needed" behavior occured.

I would suggest using 3rd party backup software as you will have many more options...like MEDIA SET  (where you can protect the disks for a specified period of time)  Symantec backup exec is nice.
